Wine Making - Do You Need a Vineyard to Make Wine?

One of the great things about beverages like wine and beer is that they can actually be made in the home. Many stores specialize in brewing your own beer or making your own wine, and can sell you kits that provide most of the ingredients and equipment needed for home brewing of wine.
To start making wine, you need fruit. Grapes are the norm when it comes to wine, however you can also add in a variety of other fruits that you may want to taste in wine form. These include apple, strawberry, blueberry, cranberry, pear, and plums. You must have a large quantity of fruit in order to start making your wine.
You will also need a large glass container. A clear jug is always a good choice. This is your "fermenting vessel". They do sell these at brewing hobby stores, and while they may be a bit pricey, they do have an airlock, which allows carbon dioxide to escape without letting air enter during the fermentation process.
A large food grade tub will also help in pressing the fruit. You can also use an electric juicer, if you cannot juice the fruit by hand. Yeast is also a necessary item, and can be purchased in grocery stores or in brewing shops. You will also need a siphoning tube.
Upon obtaining all of these items, you can start by juicing the fruit into the food grade tub. Upon having enough juice to fill the fermenting jug, decide if sugar is needed. It's suggested that 1 pound of sugar be added to every gallon of juice that you may have. To make a dryer wine, add less sugary. Add sterilization tablets to some water and add that to your fermenting vessel. It's important for the wine to ferment in a clean vessel. After sterilizing your vessel, add the juice and then add the yeast to a little warm water and sugar. Once the yeast has activated, add it to your fermenting jug. Airlock the jug and watch for bubbles from the yeast reacting to the sugar in the jug. If that is happening you know the alcohol is forming. Store your wine in a warm safe place for 8-12 months to ferment. Afterward, bottle your wine and enjoy!
